About JOANA MICHAELA
@joana_michaela_
Joana Meyer Duró, a recent graduate in Textile Technology and Design Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, was born in Barcelona in 2002 to a German father and a Spanish mother. For her final degree project, she developed an innovative 3D-printed textile, which led her to create her first dress entirely produced using this technique in Milan. This milestone marked the birth of Joana Michaela, her personal brand, where technology and craftsmanship maintain a constant dialogue.
I come from a background in textile engineering, a field rooted in precision, structure, and innovation. Yet, I have always held deep admiration for craftsmanship and the soulful beauty of the handmade. Within me, and therefore within my work, there exists a constant dialogue between two worlds: the technological, forward-looking, and rational, and the artistic, traditional, and emotional.
This duality shapes not only my creative process, but my way of being, observing, and understanding the world. I am drawn to these two seemingly opposing ends, and I find meaning in merging them. This project is the materialization of that union, formed through my personal universe and my own sense of aesthetics.
As it is said in the book “Manus x Machina” I aim too to push the potential of fashion into previously unforeseen and unimaginable directions. Through the marriage of the handmade and the machine-made, a new aesthetic is emerging, one of exciting beauty and unrestrained imagination.
This way of thinking naturally extends into my personal brand, Joana Michaela. My work is centered on exploring the delicate potential of additive manufacturing in textiles. It is an ongoing dialogue between innovation and tradition — between the possibilities opened by emerging technologies and the sensibility, care, and meaning that comes from traditional craft practices.
The design process I engage with is intricate and highly intentional. Each step requires reflection, experimentation, and sensitivity to the material. Through this journey, I’m developing a deep understanding of the limitations inherent to the medium and it is precisely through these constraints that I find creative freedom. By acknowledging them, I’m able to think beyond conventional boundaries and shape something truly new.
My brand is not just about technique; it is about crafting a new aesthetic language, one that bridges what has been with what is yet to be discovered.
Karl Lagerfeld once mentioned that this complex amalgam of hand and machine techniques not only unravels the mythologies surrounding the hand–machine conundrum, but also reveals exceptional conceptual originality and outstanding technical ingenuity.
